Tesfu Haile Tekle, has been working in the Eritrean Embassies in Ethiopia and Djibouti until recently. His carrier started in the Embassy of Eritrea in Addis Ababa before the border clash, initiated both by the PFDJ leader Issayas Afewerki and his one time friend and compatriot in arms, Meless Zenawi, the former guerrilla leader of the TPLF, who is now the Prime Minister of his country.
Tesfu Haile Tekle, momentarily in Europe and has asked political asylum in the Netherlands, who has been working in Ethiopia as a secret agent of the Eritrean regime in the heart of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa between 1992 and 1999. When the war started between the two neighbouring countries, he was detained by the Ethiopian authorities in 1999 and was deported to Eritrea in 2000. From this time until 2005 he has been working in the Embassy of Eritrea in Djibouti as a member of the protocol department.
Tesfu Tekle is not the only former employee of the Eritrean Embassies who has abandoned the regime but it is also known that several staff members of the diplomatique services in the different Continents, have left for good, when the Eritrean government called some of them to go back home, due to financial problems. The assignment to come to The Hague was as a witness to the involuntary mass deportation from Ethiopia several hundred Eritrean nationals and Ethiopians of Eritrean origin.
It is not clear whether Tesfu Tekle, has represented the case of Eritrean deportees in the International Court of Justice in The Hague, but he is now safe and protected by the Dutch Authorities. He contacted some Eritrean opposition groups and told them his case why he left and abandoned his service to the dictatorial regime, which is now desperate more than ever and closing several diplomatique premises in Europe as well as elsewhere.
