A HUME resident will be recognised for his work in helping others at the Celebration of African Australians Awards.
Yasir Mahmud, a senior employment consultant with Job Prospects, will travel to the Sydney Opera House on August 25 for the event after being selected as one of the 100 most influential African Australians.
The Roxburgh Park resident has won a string of other high profile awards, both for his work in employment services and for his role in helping different groups in the community, such as refugees and disengaged youths.
Mr Mahmud, who came to Australia as a refugee from Eritrea in East Africa in 1994, said this latest award gave him great pleasure.
“I’m very humbled, especially knowing that lots of others should also be recognised,” he said.
“It’s an amazing feeling and it helps me to do more.”
After arriving in Melbourne, Mr Mahmud completed a Bachelor of Engineering degree before returning to university to complete his Masters.
However, it was in helping others that he found his true calling, leading to a change of career.
It was his work with disadvantaged jobseekers that lead to him being named the Australian National Employment Consultant of the year in 2010.
This followed his Australian Muslim Role Model of the Year award in 2009.
He is also involved in different community groups, including Youth in Progress – an organisation he set up to offer guidance to young people.
Kids play in soccer tournaments, participate in mentoring sessions and take part in community work.
