Remah’s Tribute to Abdallah Nasser

BISMILLAHI RAHMAN AL RAHEEM

(IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE GRACIOUS AND MERCIFUL)

I WOULD LIKE TO BEGIN BY EXTENDING TO YOU THE TRADITIONAL ISLAMIC GREETING OF

ASALAMUALAKUM (PEACE BE UPON YOU)

We are gathered here today to remember Abdullah Nasser, an intellectual, a brother, a soldier, and a patriot

The story of Abdullah Nasser is one of sacrifice, and determination.

He sacrificed over 30 years of his life fighting foreign and domestic oppression.

20 years of those years were spent struggling against Ethiopian subjugation, and

Later 15 years were sacrificed fighting a domestic dictatorship that threatened to dismantle his dream of a liberated Eritrea.

Abdullah came from a long line of patriots that were willing to lay down their lives in order to live in peace and freedom.

His life began in a village called Eyeromali, which means sunless valley.

It was named such in acknowledgment of the dense jungle that surrounds it.

Abdullah, as a child was surrounded by the magnificence of wildlife, and drew solace from the peace and tranquility with in it.

He realized that nature and humanity shared the common need to be free from corruption.

Eritrea, named for the brilliant sea that surrounds it, has had a long history of foreign subjugation and illegal occupation.

The Eritrean people themselves mighty and brave never accepted occupation lightly despite it being their reality.

They always fought hard to be free.

Abdullah Nasser, was no exception he saw the reality of a liberated Eritrea as though it was in front of his very eyes, and was willing to work hard to achieve it.

Abdullah, had two loves Eritrea, and the forest, so it was no surprise then that he pursued agrial studies in Egypt.

As a student in Egypt he was among the early founders of the Eritrean Student Union whose members were made up of Eritrean students from Asmara to Cairo.

Through this union Eritrean Students’ raised awareness about the plight of their people all over the world.

They lobbied support for the Eritrean struggle from shores of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa with the intention of liberating their land from the tyranny of the then oppressor Ethiopia.

After completing his studies he took up arms and joined the Eritrean liberation front with the intention of liberating Eritrea directly.

His experience with agriculture proved to be instrumental in the struggle for; he was in charge of running the Ali Ghadder farm in the Gash Region of Eritrea.

This farm was the source of food for the liberation fighters who without it would have starved.

Abdullah, along side his comrades braved the cruel jungle climate relentless in their efforts to achieve a liberated Eritrea.

It has been over 30 years since the Eritrean struggle began, and let me tell you ladies and gentlemen it is not over!

Eritrea, officially became independent in 1991, but Abdullah and all those that had been on the front lines of the initial struggle knew that Eritrea, wasn’t free yet because a tyrant had come to power.

When the smoke screen cleared the Eritrean population knew it as well. Today, Eritrea is an embattled nation with a horrific human right’s record.

“If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation…want crops without plowing up the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters…. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”

Those are the words of the great abolitionist orator, editor, author, reformer, and statesman Frederick Douglas, who like Abdullah, believed that a people have to struggle in order to change the oppressive conditions they live under. As Eritrean’s we have to realize that our destiny is not poverty, misery, and, dictatorship. We are a free people and it is high time we begin to act like it.

I would like to conclude by giving my condolences to the family of Abdullah Nasser, especially his brother Ahmed Nasser who not only lost his brother, but also his best friend.

ALLAH YARHAMAK ABDULLAH NASSER

(MAY ALLAH HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOUL)

May the struggle continue in the name of God with the cause of achieving justice in Eritrea.
