Nationa Conference- Big Idea

Horizontal and vertical integration of the struggle against the dictatorship in Eritrtea

By Fesseha Nair

The struggle against dictatorship requires a strategy that links the struggle vertically and horizontally. The conference held in 2010 in Addis provided the opportunity for laying down this strategy and revitalised the struggle against the dictator in Eritrea. The growth of national forces for democratic change are now showing results by awakening our people to participate in the struggle by excelling the performance, allocating resources in their growth direction, developing skills and methods.

The moving from the current situation to the new-meaning changing the current situation of the democratic forces can be achieved by increasing the participation of the people in the struggle through generating and delivering solid values of the people and satisfying their demands.

The partnership that evolved after the national conference provided an opportunity to associate the struggle both vertically and horizontally. It was not supposed to damage or dilute the struggle of the political organizations but to strengthen them.

In today’s article I would like to discuss on the vertical and horizontal integration that is going after the national conference for democratic change.

Vertical integration strategy

Vertical integration represents the potential growth direction of the broad national forces. This is just occurring in the process of democratizations where the flow of information is from bottom to top and vice-versa. Integration is the association and coordination of the activities that promote democratization in Eritrea. A good example is what the Ertirean National Commission is doing in cooperation with political organizations. This combination of activities as integers is the modern approach pursued by all transitions from dictatorship to democracy. (See EU Commission Documents)

Integral strategy provides access to human and material resources, enhances participation of the citizens and helps control the quality of the struggle.

Horizontal integration strategy

Horizontal strategy is the expansion of activities geographically from local to regional and from regional to international. The Eritrean National commission for democratic change is now working geographically divided in local, regional and international levels. This expansion has been best implemented by connecting them horizontally revitalising their actions against the dictatorship. The results of this strategy are now visible by mobilizing the people in every corner of the world.

Strategic planning will be the main discussion issue during the broad national congress. The future will not go as it is now if we want to move the current situation to the more advanced struggle against the dictatorship and further transit to democracy. We need assessing the current situation of the opposition camp in general and the political organizations in particular. We need  a very carefully thought based on a realistic evaluation of our current situation and the capabilities of our population that is required in order to win the dictatorship and establish a democratic society with genuine freedom, justice and human rights respect where all Eritreans live together in peace and harmony.

The Big Idea

Why national dialogues or conferences big idea because they provide the opportunity to come together and exchange ideas that can virtually give chances to create breakthrough and get solutions for your problems. Creativity and innovation comes from diversity of ideas and idea sources.(Eritrean National Conference 2010) One can get multiple sources and perspectives involved, then test the best ideas. Big ideas come when people meet and discuss. Conferences and dialogues are democratic methods generating big ideas for growth and expansion.
