Freedom of movement is violated further
ECMS –27/3/2005
Eritrean government has issued new directives in a move to tighten the movement of Eritrean citizens Further.
According to the guidelines, which are in force effective March, the minimum age for Eritrean men to apply for an exit visa is 50 years, or else the application must be supported by a minister or other government official of the same rank and approved by the office of president.
This is the second change in policy since January 2003 when the minimum age was raised from 40 to 45.
Meanwhile, the government has announced any citizen with foreign currency should open a book on the bank and register the money he owned in totally. Any person, who failed to do so, will bear the responsibility, according to the announcement.
Eritrea is facing the worst economic crisis ever; the dramatic deterioration of economic growth is the causes for such measures observers say. As a consequence the Eritrean youth are rushing out of their country legal and illegally.
It is to be remembered that the number of new arrivals in kassala has reached 500, an event that put the UNHCR in an emergency state and forced the Sudanese deputy commissioner and his stuff to move to kassala to observe their situation.
Though the number is not equivalent to Sudan, Eritrean youth are fleeing to Ethiopia, Yemen and others in considerable numbers as well.
