Eritrean Centre for Media Services (ECMS) –26/3/2005
The United Nations high commissioner for refugee at Kassala has declared state of emergency due to the over flooding number of Eritrean youth on 25th of March 2005.
According to the statement given by the organization, the number that included women has reached 375 during the past two days alone. The youth have managed to flee from Sawa and other military camps. The Sudanese Kassala State is said to have granted them asylum.
The Sudanese government has not yet commented on the event, however, there has been concerns to the military build up of Eritrean forces on its borders.
Although, the number is getting doubled every time, the Eritrean youth has been deserting the army opposing the consistent forced conscription. The recent round ups that include men under 65 has aggravated the situation sources said.
Due to the rising tension with Ethiopia, the government of Eritrea is amassing forces in the border, which created loop holes to the deserters.
