Meqalih Forto- The first anniversary edition (6th edition)
Asmara 18-09-2014.
Freedom Friday (Arbi Harnet) activists inside Eritrea have today distributed copies of their underground newsletter as a mark of defiance on the 13th anniversary of the closure of all independent newspapers inside the country.
The newsletter that has editorials and articles in Arabic and Tigrigna is a collaborative initiative lining Eritrea based activists with those in the diaspora.
The news later, Meqaleh Forto (Echoes of Forto) was inspired by the brave attempted coup against the ruling party PFDJ carried out at the ministry of information at its base in Forto Asmara on January 21, 2013. And the launch last year was aimed to coincide with the 12th anniversary since the closure of newspapers in Eritrea.
Project coordinators claim that although circulation is still limited due to restrictions in resources available to activists inside the country, the printing and distribution of their own newsletter has given activists in Asmara a lot of hope and showing them the possibilities.
The first anniversary edition (6th edition), focuses on the ideals of democracy and justice that were betrayed by the regime in Eritrea when reformists and independent journalists were disappeared on September 18, 2001.”
