Urgent Appeal

The deteriorating situation in Libya has not only caused the killing of thousands of protesting civilians but has also put the lives of transiting refugees in great danger. In the last few years, Libya has become one of the main transiting routes for Africans fleeing their countries in search of safety or better life. Many of these are Eritreans fleeing an open-ended compulsory military service that has been a major cause of great suffering in Eritrea Concerned with the impact of the events unfolding in Libya and the alarming reports that some have already been killed while thousands remain stranded, Citizens for Democratic Rights in Eritrea -CDRiE would like to draw the attention of the international community and especially the UN to another looming human tragedy that can still be averted. We therefore make an urgent appeal to the UNHC. UNHCR and other UN bodies as well the EU to take the necessary steps to guarantee the safety and security of these refugees. CDRiE would like to express its readiness to work with and assist all parties involved in providing help and assistance to the Eritrean refugees. CDRiE Executive Board London 28.02.2011
